Dopo il successo della prima edizione 2011, nel 2012 la Facoltà di Design e Arti, in collaborazione con la Unità di ricerca di Museologia del design, organizza il workshop ExhiBIT rivolto agli studenti del corso di laurea specialistica di Design (indirizzi di prodotto e comunicazione) e del corso di laurea specialistica in Performing arts.
Il workshop si tiene dall’11 al 27 febbraio 2012, presso la sede dell’ex convento delle Terese a Venezia.

Il lavoro di Nanni Strada nella moda è correlato strettamente al mondo del progetto, del design e dell’architettura. La sua è una ricerca originale sullo statuto dell’abito che comporta un ripensamento radicale delle regole della moda.
Nanni Strada inizia la sua carriera di fashion designer negli anni Sessanta collaborando con Avon-Celli, Missoni, Cadette e Fiorucci, per il quale disegna nel 1967 i primi sandali di plastica e le calzature a iniezione. Nel 1970 progetta per Max Mara la collezione Sportmax di capi spalla sfoderati e geometrici, con cuciture a saldatura, in taglia unica. Nei primi anni Settanta elabora un sistema d’indumenti “a pelle” sperimentando abiti senza cuciture realizzati con macchine circolari per calze.
Questa ricerca è visualizzata nel film Il Manto e la Pelle (realizzato con Clino Trini Castelli), presentato alla XV Triennale di Milano nel 1973. I suoi progetti comprendono gli abiti flessibili (Pli-Plà) e da viaggio (Torchon).
Nel 1979 è premiata con il Compasso d’Oro. Il suo approccio è teorizzato nel libro Moda design (Editoriale Modo) che pubblica nel 2000. Il lavoro di Nanni Strada è stato esposto in Italia e all’estero in mostre quali The Body Show (1972), Dal cucchiaio alla città (1983), Il design italiano 1964/1990 (1996), La città e il design. La memoria e il futuro (2001); Mutations Mode – 1960:2000 (2000); Nanni Strada – Abitare l’abito (2003); Skin + Bones. Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture (2007 e 2008).

Vari componenti dell’Unità di ricerca di Museologia del design hanno partecipato alla commissione tematica ‘Musei del design‘, che ha avuto luogo a Milano il 1° dicembre, in occasione del primo convegno di AisDesign (Associazione italiana degli storici del design).

La call, lanciata lo scorso giugno, poneva quesiti diversi, organizzati sotto tre grandi temi:
- Storia e cultura del design (nel museo e dei musei)
- Le funzioni del museo: conservare, interpretare, esporre, comunicare il design
- Educazione (al design e attraverso il design)

In risposta alla call hanno inviato riflessioni e proposte storici, studiosi e designer provenienti da diverse università e con differenti approcci: Claudia Cantarin, Cecilia Cecchini, Rosa Chiesa, Elda Danese, Ali Filippini, Susana Gonzaga, Lisa Hockemeyer, Eleonora Lupo, Gabriele Monti, Paola Proverbio, Teresita Scalco, Maria Cristina Tonelli, Alessandra Vaccari.

Coordinati da Fiorella Bulegato e Maddalena Dalla Mura, i lavori della commissione hanno considerato la relazione fra storia e cultura del design e musei sia in prospettiva storica sia in chiave critica per il futuro, attingendo anche a modelli e casi studio provenienti da ambiti museali ed espositivi diversi.

Numerosi temi sono stati discussi: dal museo come luogo di costruzione disciplinare e di identità all’exhibit design, dalla progettazione dell’esperienza educativa al ruolo del designer come curatore, dalla conservazione della cultura materiale e immateriale alla sua ‘attualizzazione’ attraverso molteplici strategie.

La commissione ha infine elaborato una bozza di proposta per un convegno internazionale da organizzare fra il 2012 e il 2013, nell’ambito delle attività di AisDesign.

Members of the Research Group in the Museology of Design participated in the study committee on ‘Design Museums’, held on December 1 in Milan, on the occasion of the first conference of AisDesign (Italian Association of Historians of Design).

Launched earlier this year, the call asked for reflections and proposals focusing on three strands:
- History and culture of Design (in the museum / of the museums)
- The functions of the museum: preserving, interpreting, exhibiting, communicating design
- Education (of and through design)

Chaired by Fiorella Bulegato and Maddalena Dalla Mura the committee was participated by: Claudia Cantarin, Cecilia Cecchini, Rosa Chiesa, Elda Danese, Ali Filippini, Susana Gonzaga, Lisa Hockemeyer, Eleonora Lupo, Gabriele Monti, Paola Proverbio, Teresita Scalco, Maria Cristina Tonelli, Alessandra Vaccari.

A wide range of themes and issues emerged and were discussed: from the museum as a place for disciplinary construction to exhibit design, from the design of the museum experience to the role of the designer as curator, from the preservation of material and immaterial culture to its re-enactment via multiple strategies.

The work of the study committee resulted in a draft proposal for an international conference on design museums and design for museums, to be organized in 2012/2013 in the frame of the activities of AisDesign.

“Architettura e museo” è un binomio incompleto. I musei contemporanei sono strutture e organismi complessi: oggetto di molteplici interessi e aspettative, sono nello stesso tempo interpreti e produttori di relazioni che operano a vari livelli, dal territorio all’esperienza di visita individuale.
Intervenendo all’incrocio fra possibilità e realtà, l’attività del progettista (e il progetto architettonico) è sempre più un “processo” che necessariamente si costruisce in dialogo con contesti, figure, istituzioni, persone.
Attraverso il caso di M9 – il museo e polo culturale di Mestre promosso dalla Fondazione di Venezia che aprirà nel 2015 – e mettendo in luce alcuni aspetti del percorso affrontato dallo studio Sauerbruch Hutton, dal concorso verso il progetto esecutivo, l’obiettivo è sollecitare alcune riflessioni sulle relazioni che legano oggi architettura e museo.

City of Museums. Museum Clusters in the Contemporary City
In our culture the museum occupies a privileged place symbolically, but also physically, in the city. And not only it occupies it, but it creates it, defines it, changes it and gives it meaning. This lecutre aims at demonstrating that that place is in the museum cluster. And in the cluster, out of which it becomes almost impossible to contemplate the museum, the museum is changing; the meaning and the importance of its basic aspects are changing. The hypothesis is that in the museum project the urbanistic aspect – its place and relationship with the city – takes precedence over its museographic and architectonic aspect. The content – collection and display – and the architecture of the museum merge into the cultural density of the cluster as the place of the museum, highlighting that place and urbanism in the foreground. The place – the cluster – becomes thus the key to a new reading of the museum and the city. Supporting the idea of multi-place, with multiple functions, meanings and audiences, the cluster is dismembered. It is considered as the physical location in the city, the urban form the cluster takes, the dynamics and relationships it establishes, and the public place which it creates in this interaction with the city.
Through a historical, comparative and critical analysis of these four dimensions of the place of museums, with this talk the hypothesis will be proved, as well as the theory of the locus genii, showing the fundamental role of the museum cluster as a force that organizes, generates and transforms the museum system and the urban system. It demonstrates that the museum boom, by creating, changing, and emphasizing museum clusters, represents a revolution in the relationship and conception of the museum and of the city.
From the museum cluster is observed a whole range of radical changes and innovations in the museum, in the very museum cluster and in the city, through which is explained the primacy of the urbanistic aspect in the project of the museum, and the theory is extended to the importance of the museum aspect in the project of the city. The cluster of museums is raised in rank of the urban manifesto, showing that new models of the museum-cluster, the museum cluster and the “city of museums”, are different scales or levels of an urbanism of densities and flows that maximizes the use and impact of museums and public spaces between them in the mobilization and dissemination of culture and cultural information.
Although the study includes a wider historical and geographic space to demonstrate the extension of this still little investigated and insufficiently well-known phenomenon, the accent is on the transformations of the museums and their clusters and systems during last three decades, in the principal European cities, including also the remarkable cases from other continents that suggest the possible directions of a future development.

Connecting Museum with University and Research
The activities programmed by the Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHUB) describe the mission of the center: safeguard the past, observe the present and stimulate the future of the design world. The DHUB exhibition program, on one hand is based on the most classic activity like the permanent and temporary exhibitions of the collections, and on the other hand our activities include new formats more open and in permanent process of construction that are developed as a work in progress by a multidisciplinary team. During the last three years we have organized and produced different typologies of activities: study galleries, permanent and temporary exhibitions, dhubsessions, workshops, conferences and Laboratory. This session will be focused on the process of creating a program from the idea to the production which includes research, innovation, University and Industry. Between the Screen and the Building: Museum Architecture in the Digital Age
Half a century after André Malraux’s influential essay “Le musée imaginaire”, the diffusion of art and architecture through images reached an unprecedented scale. The development of information and communications technologies, over the last two decades, has definitely related contemporary culture to the digital world. With the generalized use of computers and global access to Internet, virtual contact both with works of art and museum buildings tends to anticipate, or even replace, the real experience of visiting a certain museum. While on-line databases have expanded the idea of collection, the increasing possibilities of architectural representation have led to the creation of virtual museums, easily accessible on the Internet. If, in many cases, digital projects represent existing institutions, virtual museums can also assume the condition of alternative exhibition spaces, literally “museums without walls” that are not expected to have any material correspondent.
The aim of this talk is to discuss how digital technologies are reshaping museum imaginary, redefining the role of content, container and users.

Nell’ambito della X Settimana della cultura d’impresa, iniziativa nazionale promossa da Confindustria, mercoledì 23 novembre dalle ore 9.30 alle 18 si svolgerà a Venezia presso l’Università Iuav, a Palazzo Badoer, aula Tafuri, il convegno “Comunicare l’impresa 2. L’archivio come strumento di progetto e di comunicazione d’azienda”.

La giornata è dedicata ad approfondire il tema degli archivi d’impresa del design e della moda come fautori di “racconti” sul progetto e fondamento delle strategie di comunicazione aziendale, ponendo al centro del confronto il ruolo sempre più rilevante del design nell’identità dell’impresa. Intervengono storici e critici, curatori, associazioni professionali, imprese e progettisti che illustreranno progetti di valorizzazione della memoria e recenti realizzazioni in campo espositivo.

L’iniziativa, promossa dal Dottorato in Scienze del Design e dall’Unità di ricerca di Museologia del design, è inserita nel programma dell’Associazione Museimpresa e realizzata in collaborazione con la Fondazione Isec. Oltre il silenzio delle cose.
Professionisti in dialogo per la comunicazione educativa dei musei

Gli oggetti conservati all’interno di un museo sono portatori di storie e di luoghi. Essi, tuttavia, possono restare in un muto universo autoreferenziale se la loro esposizione e la loro proposta al pubblico non è frutto di un dialogo tra le diverse professionalità che dovrebbero, nel migliore dei casi, interagire per un museo davvero comunicativo: il direttore/conservatore, il museo grafo/architetto allestitore, il responsabile/l’operatore dei servizi educativi.
Questo approccio inter-relazionale tra diverse discipline dell’ambito museale è quanto mai necessario quando un’esposizione, sia essa permanente o temporanea, è rivolta anche ad un pubblico, prevalentemente scolastico, in un’ottica educativa.

La quindicesima edizione della Giornata Regionale di Studio sulla Didattica Museale, annualmente promossa dalla Regione del Veneto e organizzata con la consueta collaborazione con la Fondazione Mazzotti, in partenariato con il Museo di Storia Naturale e Archeologia di Montebelluna (noto per essere un istituto particolarmente sensibile alla comunicazione museale e alla formazione in questo campo) intende offrire al pubblico degli operatori museali un’occasione di riflessione trasversale attraverso la proposta di casi studi a livello nazionale e locale.

Architecture on Stage. Exhibit in Absence / Exhibit in Presence
Assuming that the transformation of the territory involves the protection and enhancement of cultural assets and urban identity, the paper addresses the issue of exhibiting and “staging” architecture to define methods of intervention and display that can contribute to his knowledge and decoding. Subject of the paper is thus the increase in value of architecture as a set of artefacts and as a discipline, “in absence” (documents and simulacra of architecture in the gallery space) and “in presence” (buildings that are in urban space). As many studies have shown, the preservation and valorisation of architectural heritage is a critical and complicated question. If these actions are necessary for the identity and the memory of the territory, they necessarily involve two risks: foremost touristic consumption, secondarily “museification” of sites that should transform together with the city life. For this reason, it is important to think about immobile heritage as a transforming territory, and link it to exhibiting actions on architectural issues inside the museum. The paper offers a methodological framework, liable to make visible the value of architecture, in a “mise-en-scene” mainly linked to the relationship between the centrality of the museum and the scenarios that it wants to tell.

Bridging Perspectives: Learning from and about Design in the Museum
Little is known about the specific learning needs of Design students in the museum, understanding more about how they learn would be helpful to museum professionals working in Design-related settings (Caban and Wilson 2002). Professionals from the higher education (HE) Design and museum education sectors have skills which complement each other. Practice-based Design tutors have expertise in pedagogic methods and object-based teaching which is suited to the needs of their students. This knowledge is often missing from traditional forms of museum interpretation such as the museum label. Museum educators, on the other hand, are practised in developing ways of making collections interesting and accessible to a variety of different audiences, and are knowledgeable about the museum and its collections.
Over its five year duration, the collections-based Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design (CETLD) investigated relationships between museums and HE. A partnership between the University of Brighton, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the Royal College of Art (RCA) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), it undertook resource development, research and teaching to support the needs of HE Design students in museums. Drawing on the work and experience of the CETLD initiative, this paper will examine how best to support and facilitate creative learning opportunities for HE Design students in museums. It will highlight findings of CETLD’s research programme including an examination of how students learn to see and interrogate the museum and how they make connections between visual research, the construction of visual material and the design process. It argues that museums in general need to develop their knowledge and awareness of HE audiences (students, academics and tutors); it does not propose that they should offer a specialist service but offers some reasons why it may be worth considering HE as a distinct audience while serving the needs of a wider public.

“The MoMu Effect?”: On the Relation between Fashion Museums,
Fashion Design and Fashion Studies
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of fashion museums in our understanding of fashion design. Specifically, I will present the particular museological experience of the Fashion Museum of the Province of Antwerp (MoMu). Since it opened in 2001, MoMu has represented a unique phenomenon within the international atlas of fashion museums, mainly focusing on contemporary fashion. This is probably due to its mission of concentrating on Belgian fashion that, since the early Nineties, has represented an innovative and unique approach to fashion design. In MoMu’s approach to fashion, this peculiar character of Belgian fashion played an important role as an index of the museums’ practices: from its collecting policies to its exhibiting strategies. This museum’s peculiarity has reflected diverse effects. If on the one side MoMu has developed an innovative method of reading fashion history, on the other side it has also been recognized for its controversial dialogues with fashion designers. This paper aims to discuss MoMu’s discourse, retraced through the analysis of its practices: archival methods, exhibitions, catalogues, communicational strategies, etc. By doing so, I intend to pursue the discussion on the relations between fashion design and fashion museums, simultaneously exploring how such a debate is tied to fashion academic research.

Museum Experience at the Interface of Design, Arts and Science
The Ars Electronica Center as part of Ars Electronica Linz and as a prototype of a “Museum of the Future” dedicates a unique dramaturgy to the juxtaposition of contemporary art and modern science and – with its open labs and interactive scenarios – sees itself as an infrastructure for curious minds, where personal experience and experimentation play a central role. The exploration of technology, new media, their correlation with art and science and their influence on social processes have always characterized this interdisciplinary approach, aiming to facilitate a holistic view on the designed world we live in. Examples are given which suggest how to critically and emancipatory engage different museum audiences in design thinking and practice with activities such as embodied experimentation, structural exploration, critical reframing, reflective tinkering, creative prototyping and constructional learning.

Luogo di conservazione, interpretazione e promozione della cultura materiale e immateriale, il museo moderno rappresenta un importante terreno di confronto per le discipline del progetto. Architettura, design, arte hanno variamente contribuito a configurare e sperimentare il museo nelle sue differenti funzioni, avanzando nel contempo nuove istanze e problematiche per quanti operano nei musei.
“Museo e discipline del progetto” vuole indagare le molteplici relazioni che legano queste discipline al museo, dando spazio a ricerche e progetti recenti, per riflettere non solo su opportunità e sfide contingenti ma più ampiamente sul ruolo del museo nel nuovo millennio.

Il secondo incontro si concentra sul contributo dei Musei per la cultura del progetto.

#2 Museums for Design Culture

A place for preserving, interpreting and promoting the tangible and intangible culture, the modern museum is an important stage for the design disciplines. Architecture, design, art, fashion, variously contribute to shape the museum and experiment with its various functions, while challenging them.
“Museum and Design Disciplines” aims to examine the multifarious relationships that connect these disciplines to the museum, bringing to the fore recent research and projects, in order to reflect not only on contingent issues and opportunities, but more broadly on the role of museums in the new millennium.

The second meeting focuses on the contribution of Museums for Design Culture.
